A new server for the GG.ST IRC Network has been added, this time in Germany. The goal is to replace the french server (at OVH) which network has been really bad lately (at least one down a week).
The server is already online in the irc.gg.st pool, and will be used to monitor stability of the new server. If things are stable, the French server will be removed from the pool (before August 15th) and taken offline a few days later.

Closing an IRC server is always difficult as people tend to connect directly to the server’s IP, and anyway just changing the dns won’t make people reconnect immediatly. Many people stay connected for days, if not for weeks.
That’s why closing a server must be done at least 2 weeks before. We first remove the server from the DNS pool, then wait one week, then start sending notices and private messages to remaining people to notify them.
Right now we are at the “one week” mark. You can see the user count has decreased quite a lot.
Most of the users were first directed to our second european node, however the new US node is now open and people are being sent there too. I will implement support for GeoIP in SimpleDNSd soon, so people will be directed to either server based on informations available from their DNS server (the ISP dns server tend to be in the same country as the user is, for others like google’s 8.8.8.8 I really don’t know how things will end).
Some people who manage Invision Boards have seen the new “FaceBook connect” feature as something interesting… However at first, I couldn’t see the “Connect with FaceBook” button.
Searching around a bit finally got this error from Chrome:

Domains, protocols and ports must match.
On Firefox (and probably other browsers), this works without problem. Just sharing that so other people do not get stuck with the same problem.

This might not need a post by itself, but since I need a new post to check how refresh works, here it is.
Basically, GG.ST finally got news displayed on main page. What’s more, as I’m too lazy to make a backoffice, I’m just “importing” news from WordPress using some kind of engine written in PHP, which can do much more than that… Well, stay tuned, as I’m going to provide more news soon!

Thanks to some dudes in an american company, I finally could open an IRC network and get some funds to start with a nice domain. I spent more than 3 years waiting for the expiration of some kind of bounding paper, that was probably not legal (I believe you can’t have an anti-competition article without anything back, but I’m just too lazy to bring this to court, waiting 3 years clears this anyway) but is now over.
So, everyone is welcome on the newly born IRC Network GG.ST. This will remain some people of old times, when we were called something similar, and well, the idea is partially coming from there.
So, because of this unfortunate event 3 years ago, I became “potentially legally unable” to manage an IRC network for a duration of 3 years, and had to get other people manage/run/operate/etc… networks, as I could never leave IRC. I kept working on software for irc, but left my hands out of network management.
So, now that I’m back, time for some fun, and need to bring back some users. I’ll probably merge the existing MatrIRX project into pinetd2, by adding to pinetd2 some “protocol adapters” thanks to the new IPC structure of “ports” I recently added.
On a side note, pinetd2 should go on public beta near January 20th/22nd 2009, as PHP 5.3.0 should also go beta at this time. Good news for everyone waiting for this, and for Grepsd who’s currently working on some stuff for pinetd.
